Empedia - An Interactive Guide to the East Midlands

Empedia - An Interactive Guide to the East Midlands

Cuttlefish has been commissioned by Renaissance East Midlands to develop an exciting new location-based Internet system. "Empedia" will provide a range of tools to enable museums, libraries and archives to create interactive maps and exhibition guides that will be viewable on computers and mobile phones.

it is hoped that Empedia will become an ever-growing collection of maps, audio tours, picture trails, video trails and interactive guides that people can use to explore the rich culture of the UK's East Midlands. Users will be able access Empedia using a standard web browser on a desktop computer or laptop, but it will really come alive when used on a mobile device such as an iPhone. This will allow residents and visitors to the East Midlands to have Empedia - and all of the great content it will contain - with them wherever they might be.

The project officially started in April 2010 and development of the platform is progressing well. It will have a limited release in September 2010 followed by a full public launch in February 2011.

Cuttlefish is looking for expressions of interest in the project from museums, libraries and archives in the East Midlands. If you think you might want to add content to the Empedia system, or simply want to know more, then please contact Sean Clark at seanc@cuttlefish.com or telephone 01509 231233.

We're Backing Andy!

Cuttlefish have once again given Loughborugh MP Andy Reed's campaign a boost with an updated website.

Having worked with Andy over the years we have great respect for his difficult and demanding job. To make things easier, his new website pulls information directly from his Twitter and Flickr accounts which he frequently updates throughout the day wherever he might be Along with this social media Andy also keeps his personal blog up to date regularly.

Update: Sadly Andy didn't quite manage to hang onto his Loughborough seat this time around therefore we imagine he'll be taking a well earned rest.

Phasing Out Internet Explorer 6

Phasing Out Internet Explorer 6

Since Google's recent announcement regarding the phasing out of support for Internet Explorer 6 within its Google Apps products pressure has mounted on various other organisations to drop the out-dated browser, including the UK Government.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) was first launched in 2001 and quite simply the technology has moved on. Because a number of users are still accessing web-pages using this out-dated browser, developers such as Cuttlefish are restricted in the use of newer techniques and methods that deliver a richer web experience.

Whilst we welcome this new pressure on consumers to upgrade to a newer version of Internet Explorer, or even an alternative browser, we will continue to test our projects on a wide selection of browsers, including IE6.

Where possible we allow IE6 to "fail gracefully" and still be usable by those 10-15% of users still using the the ageing browser, until ultimately these usage statistics drop even further.
